The Charlie Rose Science Series: The most recent on Stem Cell Research study – 56:46 -…
This fifth episode of the Charlie Rose Science Series is an expedition of one of the most appealing fields of science: stem cell research study. Our panel discusses existing successes in the use of stem cells, such as bone marrow transplants, and the hopes for future applications of both adult and embryonic stem cells, both as a method to design and study illness and a possible treatment for a range of conditions, such as heart and blood disease, diabetes, Parkinson'' s, Lou Gehrig ' s disease, Alzheimer ' s, back cable injuries, and cancer. The uses of federal and private funding for the research are also thought about. These problems are discussed by Sir Paul Nurse, president of The Rockefeller University, Doug Melton, Co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, George Daley of Children'' s Health center Boston and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Larry Goldstein, director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell program, and Story Landis of the National Institute of Neurological Conditions and Stroke.

Prof. Siddharthan Chandran – Stem Cell Research
Professor Siddharthan Chandran is Director of the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research study at the University of Edinburgh.

Stem cells have actually heralded a transformation in research, offering real possibilities for the discovery and delivery of new treatments.

Teacher Chandran will explore the misconceptions and hype surrounding stem cells and provide the potential pledge research study in this location might give patients with neurodegenerative conditions.

Director Andy McMahon leads a trip of the Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC.

Established in 2006 with a gift from Eli and Edythe Broad, and assistance from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), USC’s stem cell research center hosts first-rate researchers who are harnessing the power of stem cell biology to deal with neurodegeneration; hearing loss; blood, heart and kidney disease; osteoarthritis and bone fractures; and cancer.

USC’s talented researchers count on the center’s advanced centers in imaging; restorative screening; circulation cytometry; and stem cell isolation, culture and engineering to move discoveries from the laboratory and into the center.

The center likewise works as the heart of the new Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medication, as well as the USC Stem Cell Effort, an interdisciplinary, university-wide partnership that leverages the transformative power of stem cells to establish the treatments of the future.

Calling them “our bodies’ own repair kits,” Susan Solomon advocates research using lab-grown stem cells. By growing individual pluripotent stem cell lines, her team creates testbeds that could accelerate research into curing diseases — and perhaps lead to individualized treatment, targeted not just to a particular disease but a particular person.
