Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulidis to discuss bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East region as well as Russia’s representation at the Council of Europe, in Moscow, Monday.

Speaking on Russia-Cyprus relations, Lavrov stated that “today’s situation in the relations with the European Union has affected the bilateral cooperation between our countries, especially economic and trade ties,” before adding that “our relations continue to be characterised with a high level of mutual trust and respect.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Today’s situation in the relations with the European Union has affected the bilateral cooperation between our countries, especially economic and trade ties. However, we have noted that our relations continue to be characterised with a high level of mutual trust and respect. We have expressed gratitude to our Cypriot friends for their readiness to contribute to the improvement of the situation in Europe.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Once again we call on both our Western partners and our partners in the region, who have contacts and direct influence on different opposition groups, to force them immediately to separate, to dissociate themselves from al-Nusra in order that we could concentrate on the fight against terrorism. If it doesn’t happen, they basically make themselves accomplices of Jabhat al-Nusra and therefore become a legal target in accordance with the decisions made in the UN Security Council.”
