October 18-20th, 2013 the international World Courts of Women (WCW) was held in Kensington, Philadelphia to address poverty in America.

The WCW featured public hearings documenting the personal testimonies of struggle and survival from Americans living in poverty. They testified in front of a panel of prominent local and national jurors in order to break the silence on poverty as a violation of both women’s rights and of human rights.

The World Court in the Hague has refused to invalidate an Australian-Indonesian oil exploration treaty.

The decision dashes the hopes of the East Timorese independence movement.

Despite the World Court’s ruling not to denounce Australia’s oil exploration treaty with Indonesia, East Timorese representatives in the Hague are claiming a small victory.

SOUNDBITE:
“We are happy nevertheless with the decision of the court in stressing the right of the people of East Timor to self determination. That’s what we expected, that’s what we wanted and that’s what we got.”

SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramos-Horta, Representative of East Timor

A ruling against the treaty would have been a denial of Indonesian sovereignty over East Timor.

Indonesia launched a bloody invasion of the former Portuguese colony in 1975 and claimed the island as its own in 1976.

Portugal went to court on the island’s behalf claiming the territory covered by the treaty is invalid since the invasion was illegal.

SOUNDBITE:
“The court could not decide without the acceptance of jurisdiction of the court by Indonesia- and Indonesia does not accept the jurisdiction of the court. We have a decision not to decide- that’s all.”

SUPER CAPTION: Mijuel Galvao-Teles, lawyer representing Portugal

Australian lawyers did not defend Indonesian aggression- only the treaty itself.

SOUNDBITE:
“One of the merits of this case is to have forced Australia to change its position in the direction of East Timor.”

SUPER CAPTION: Mijuel Galvao-Teles, lawyer representing Portugal

Australia’s foreign minister is seen by members of the East Timor independence movement as treating monetary profit far more importantly than human rights.

SOUNDBITE:
“And I consider the foreign minister of Australia, Mr. Gareth Evans, who wants to be the next secretary of the UN a hypocritical person, without any principles, without any integrity”

SUPER CAPTION: Jose Ramos-Horta, Representative of East Timor

The Portuguese representatives said they would continue to act on behalf of the East Timorese people.

Tens of thousand of people are believed to have been killed as a result of Indonesia’s invasion and the island’s subsequent independence struggle.

On the third anniversary marking the massacre of 200 pro-independence demonstrators killed by Indonesian troops, another protest took shape.

Last November, thousands of East Timorese kept up their demands for an end to Indonesian rule. Rioting broke out during a memorial mass in Dili, the island’s capital.

Indonesian reinforcements were brought in to quell the demonstrations. While a bishop asked the protestors to stay calm, their anger erupted into violence. The troops charged, and the streets again became calm.

World attention was focused on Indonesia at the time as an economic summit of world leaders was taking place in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
