US Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama has made the 30-minute drive from Jerusalem to the West Bank of Ramallah via the Qalandiya checkpoint for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
He was greeted at the Muqata, the Palestinian Authority’s headquarters by Abbas’ chief aide Saeb Erekat.
Abbas will tell Obama that, if elected president, he must not waste time and must immediately turn his attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said Erekat.
Security was tight, with helmeted riot police carrying truncheons and rifles lining the access road to the walled compound.
Obama, the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential candidate, was greeted at the steps by Palestinian presidential aide Saed Erekat and the two went inside to meet Abbas.
Abbas wants Obama to take away one message from their meeting on Wednesday – if elected US president, he should focus immediately on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or any gains made in peace talks could vanish.
During a stop in Jordan on Tuesday, Obama had suggested that he was open to the Palestinians’ request.
He said if elected he would do his best to bring Israelis and Palestinians together.
However, he also cautioned that it was unrealistic to expect that a US president alone could suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace in this region.
The candidate’s visit in the West Bank generated some goodwill here, particularly since his Republican rival, John McCain, did not visit the Palestinians in a Mideast trip earlier in the summer.
Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, has said Obama was not welcome and criticised Abbas, a bitter rival, for receiving him.
Abbas aides have insisted the Palestinian leader’s meeting with Obama offers an important opportunity.
Abbas will list Palestinian grievances, including Israel’s continued settlement construction and refusal to ease restrictions on the movement of Palestinians in the West Bank, the Palestinian foreign minister said.
Obama stirred controversy in June, just after he scured the nomination, with a speech before the powerful pro-Zionist lobby group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in which he endorsed a two-state Israel-Palestine settlement, yet said Jerusalem should be both the capital of the Jewish state and undivided.

7/3/13 – President Obama said Wednesday the United States is “deeply concerned” about the Egyptian military’s decision to oust President Mohammed Morsi and suspend the nation’s constitution, and he urged a quick restoration of democracy. “I now call on the Egyptian military to move quickly and responsibly to return full authority back to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible through an inclusive and transparent process, and to avoid any arbitrary arrests of President Morsi and his supporters,” Obama said in a written statement.

Obama also said he has directed aides to review U.S. assistance to Egypt; American law forbids aids to countries to that remove democratic leaders via a military coup, though Obama did not use that term in his carefully worded statement.

“The United States continues to believe firmly that the best foundation for lasting stability in Egypt is a democratic political order with participation from all sides and all political parties — secular and religious, civilian and military,” Obama said.

While Obama and aides had urged Morsi to work with protesters in recent days, the Egyptian military announced Wednesday it has suspended the nation’s recent Islamic-backed constitution, called for early elections, and appointed the head of a constitutional court as Egypt’s interim head of state.

In its statement on the change in government, the Egyptian Armed Forces said it “stands distant from political forces,” and is providing a “road map” to future elections.

Morsi’s Twitter feed described the military’s action as a “full coup,” and urged citizens “not to accept” it. In a taped statement broadcast on Al Jazeera, Morsi said he is still Egypt’s legitimate president, and remains open to negotiations.

In his statement, Obama — who met with national security aides Wednesday — said that “during this uncertain period, we expect the military to ensure that the rights of all Egyptian men and women are protected.”

Earlier, the administration had called for a calm resolution of the crisis in Cairo.
